It might happen. 10 Mar 2005
I was just reading Benge's message. You might just get your wish. I was listening to the radio yesterday and Mel Gibson is going to re-release The Passion this weekend. The controversy might just start all over again, but hey, at least we'll hear from some of our old friends again.

About the reunion, the more the merrier. Call and email the people you still stay in touch with. Not only for the benefit of seeing our old mission friends but I know Pres. Gaviola looks forward to seeing as many of us as he can while he's here.

I hope to see a lot of you there.

Philippines Ilagan Mission Reunion
President Julio G. Gaviola Attending

Friday, April 1, 2005 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm

Being Held at the:
Kaysville Brookhaven Chapel
190 N Country Lane (1125 E)
Kaysville, UT 84037

Agenda:
President Gaviola will be here from the Philippines! He has taken pictures from the mission, including new chapels that have been built, existing chapels that have been added onto, and a few pictures of the members. We will be presenting these pictures as a slide show at 7:45pm. As well, there will be a lot of visiting and catching up from mission friends.

Refreshments:
Please bring some type of desert or goodie to share, it does not need to be a lot, but if everyone brings something, then we will have plenty of treats to go around. We will provide the drinks and the paper products.

Please be sure to email and call all of your friends / old comps from the mission. The mission website is the only place that we will be advertising for this reunion, and not everybody checks this site frequently. Please try and spread the word, and hopefully we can have a great turnout for President Gaviola. If you have any questions, or would like to help, please feel free to email either one of us. Hope to see you there!

NO NEWS? 08 Mar 2005
I guess nobody has anything to post anymore. We need a good contoversy in order to get any new messages! Maybe we need another great movie like "THE PASSION" ... Everybody voiced an opinion on that subject.
Or maybe it would be better to have another RM go back for a wife... that always causes a good bit of controversy.

What's up? 10 Feb 2005
It has been a slow month or so on the old message board. I thought I'd drop in and give a little update.

We have been busy with our kids. Harley is in dance class and has been doing cheer camps and drill team camps. Who knows if she'll still like that when she gets older but for now she loves it.

Eliza our second tries to do everything Harley does. She's our little monkey, climbing all over everything. She also loves to do the whole dance thing, no classes but she's twirling every time the music comes on.

Steve Hiatt posted a message about a reunion a while back. Lets all get behind him and see what we can do to help out. It would be great to see our old mission friends and I know Pres. Gaviola would love to see as many of us as possible.

Hopefully we'll see you at the reunion.

Thanks Hiatt 04 Feb 2005
Thanks for the update. I really appreciate it.

I didn't really think he was dead or anything, I just figured that the storm must've been so bad that they lost cellular service in the area or something.
Thanks again.

Benge 03 Feb 2005
E. Benge,

I talked to President Gaviola This morning on the phone, and I thought I would ask him your questions...

He said that he just saw Bro Sasaban on Saturday at a Leadership Training. Bro Sasaban is now in the Bambang District Presidency. He said he is "alive and very much kicking", still lots of jokes daw. Also, he said that the Bambang Dupax area did get a lot of flooding, but did not hear that anyone died.

Anyway, just thought I would give you that update.

Take care...

Hiatt

bambang 31 Jan 2005
I was just curious if anyone currently in bambang ever checks this site. I have kept in touch with bro Felixberto sasaban since my mission ended in 1999. I have lnot been able to contact him via phone/text ever since the big typhoon "yoyong?" hit at the latter part of 2004. I wanted to ask him how bad the storm hit them. I read somewhere that 20+ people died in the dupax/bambang area.. is that true? anybody know for sure?

Information on different towns in Cagayan 29 Jan 2005
http://www.cagayan.ph/pages/cityntowns.htm

It contains interesting information about the names of towns, a little history (I've always wondered why some towns I was assigned in just flourished in the middle of nowhere), products, languages and demography.

It should make alumni and incoming missionaries appreciate the people and the culture.

Fiesta Bowl 02 Jan 2005
Hey Ilagan Mission (1997-1999)! I haven't posted anything in a while. It's nice to see the familiar names posting messages once in awhile. Was anyone at the Fiesta Bowl last night? We got a hold of some upper deck tickets and went to the game. I couldn't believe how much Red was in the crowd. It looked like a home game in Salt Lake. Well, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

ADVICE 28 Dec 2004
I think that Rick Bates previously mentioned to a new missionary that GOOD SHOES would be very important, as you will spend a great deal of time walking. I think this is good advice.

I will paste here, some advice I gave recently to someone who asked the same question.

On a more general note, it may be a good idea to get ready for a very different culture. You will find it VERY foreign. Forget the word WHY. IF you start asking why, why, why, from the getgo, you are gonna waste alot of energy saying "that doesn't make any sense"!!

Just relax and accept the culture and traditions for what they are. Don't get caught up trying to compare everything to america. Just accept it and concentrate on understanding people and the language, and eventually it will all become clear to you.

I only have one bit of advice as far as transportation is concerned. You will find that you often need to use jeepneys or tricycles to get around. As a greenie (and this is especially true if your companion is also american) never ever ask "how much?" AFTER a trip..... the price will skyrocket. It is usually a good Idea to subtly ask another passenger what the fare is before the trip starts, so after the journey you can simply hand over your money without any arguing.

best of luck,
KIRK
