Passion 20 Mar 2004
Here are three quotes, at least one given in a conference address. These are not my words so please don't e-mail me saying how I'm condemning you, and I have no right to judge. This will be my last posting to this site, good luck to all.

H. Burke Peterson, “Purify Our Minds and Spirits,” Ensign, Nov. 1980, 37

Some contribute to this personal weakness when they read or experience filthy magazines, vulgar movies or television shows, or remain in a group where unclean discussions occur. Each of these kinds of experiences will weaken any spirit, will make it less able to withstand “the fiery darts” of the adversary (Eph. 6:16).

Now, brethren of the priesthood, there should not be any X- or R-rated movies that we participate in viewing or talking about. There must be no pornographic magazines, pictures, or stories, no re-telling of filthy jokes or crude experiences. Once in a while we should stop and ask ourselves, “In whose army are we fighting? Whose battle lines are we defending?” Do you have the courage to walk out of an off-color PG-rated movie—or do you watch and listen, and suggest to yourself, “This soon will pass,” or “Everyone is doing it; it must be an acceptable type of entertainment”? Have you the courage to keep out of your home some television shows that are filled with suggestive sexual conversation—and even experiences? Have you thought lately how effective these shows are in piercing even the strongest spirits? Brethren, we must not feed ourselves a diet of trash!

H. Burke Peterson, “Touch Not the Evil Gift, nor the Unclean Thing,” Ensign, Nov. 1993, 42

Brothers, sisters, and parents are not as happy together as they used to be. We find less peace and contentedness in our hearts and homes. We do things that later we wish we had not done. Contention looms its vicious head, and when contention is present, the Spirit of Christ departs from us.

Again I say, leave it alone. Turn it off, walk away from it, burn it, erase it, destroy it. I know it is hard counsel we give when we say movies that are R-rated, and many with PG-13 ratings, are produced by satanic influences. Our standards should not be dictated by the rating system. I repeat, because of what they really represent, these types of movies, music, tapes, etc. serve the purposes of the author of all darkness.

Brethren, let’s consider again why we cannot be involved in Satan’s program of entertainment and be held guiltless. Why? Because we are men and boys of the covenant, and that makes us different from all others. When we’ve made a covenant with the Lord, we are special—not ordinary, but special. He loves all of his sons, but those of the covenant have a special responsibility.
The Lord has told us in holy writ that before we ever came to this earth we were all called to hold his priesthood and bear up his work here. It isn’t a small, insignificant task we have. He will hold us responsible for our portion of the labor.

Robert L. Simpson, “Pollution of the Mind,” Ensign, Jan. 1973, 112
How about taking just five minutes each week to review the TV log and then establishing a few rules that all the family agrees to concerning viewing time and on which channel.
Why not make some effort to find out something about the next movie that will engage your family’s undivided attention for two and a half or three hours and will probably cost you far more than you contributed to the poor and the needy that month. It goes without saying that all X- and R-rated movies are automatically eliminated.
Perhaps we should all become a lot more interested in what the school is recommending and making available to our children. How many school meetings or visits did you make during the past year?

RE: Wassup 20 Mar 2004
Hey, Hernandez, how's it hanging? What's up Faumui, Selander? Congrats Hiatt.
Last time I checked this was a portal for Ilagan mission alumni and friends.
As for the net troll hanging around this page: get lost. We can all judge for ourselves and do not need the constant buzzing of a lamok to try and irritate us. It would seem you are only here to cause contention, disarray, and stand upon your rameumptom. You're acting more like a Zoramite than a disciple of Christ.

As for your rant about R-Rated movies, you should do a little research on the doctrine before professing its verity.

This is an excerpt from an Apr. 1981 Ensign:

An “R” rating is described as “Restricted; persons under age seventeen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.” With a few exceptions, R-rated films have proved to be unacceptable to the tastes and moral conscience of most Latter-day Saints. These films generally manifest little or no restraint by those who have made them—and to whose ideas and moral values we willfully subject our hearts, our minds, and our spirits for two hours in the dark.
END QUOTE

I would point out the keywords: with a few exceptions, and generally.

This is not an absolute.

Here is another answer from someone with more authority to speak than you.
Ensign Sept. 1990.
Joseph Walker, national news placement specialist in the Church’s Public Communications Department and former film critic. The challenge to live in the world but not of the world is especially troublesome when it comes to participating in entertainment. Contemporary standards are such that no fail-safe way can predetermine the propriety of a film or television offering if you don’t actually see it—or at least hear about it from someone you trust.

The Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) ratings system is arbitrary at best, with offensive material slipping into many PG- and G-rated films. Of course, many of the movies that attract young people are rated PG-13 or even R—two categories in which graphic violence, sexuality, and coarse language are staples. Judging a movie—for good or ill—solely on an MPAA rating is a little like playing Russian roulette with your standards: Maybe your values won’t be assaulted, but maybe they will.

Moroni goes on to give us simple yet extraordinary counsel about how to separate the good from the bad in any earthly pursuit. Anything that persuades men to do good things, to believe in Christ, and to serve him, he writes, “is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ,” and you can feel pretty comfortable with it. (Moro. 7:16.) On the other hand, anything that glamorizes evil, de-emphasizes the importance of God in our lives, or persuades men to do things that are wrong is inspired by Satan and should be avoided at all costs—even if the cost is popularity. (Moro. 7:17.)
END QUOTE.

Ezra Taft Benson, who you so freely quote. Here is the complete quote taken from the 1986 May Ensign. A conference edition.

We counsel you, young men, not to pollute your minds with such degrading matter, for the mind through which this filth passes is never the same afterwards. Don’t see R-rated movies or vulgar videos or participate in any entertainment that is immoral, suggestive, or pornographic. Don’t listen to music that is degrading.
END QUOTE.

I would like to point out that this was given during the Priesthood session of that conference and aimed specifically at the young men.

Current revelation has delivered the same message to all youth.

Adults are cautioned repetitively about trusting the rating system of the MPAA. In fact, we are, as adults, reminded to use our judgement when deciding which movies to view. It has been repeatedly stated in church publications that we need to pick our movies wisely and that there is no arbitrary ruling on ratings.

In fact, ratings from the MPAA have been constantly proven to be an ineffective method of choosing which movies are acceptable.

I suppose that perhaps a movie with a PG-13 rating, regardless of content, is acceptable by your standards simply because a prophet did not warn young men to not watch PG-13 movies? Well, there are more than enough PG-13 movies with content that should abhor a Latter-day Saint.

But then again it would seem that you would wrest the letter of the law contrary to the spirit of the law.

You should not tout personal conviction as doctrine to the Saints. It is not your calling. It is not your place.

You are beyond the edict of righteousness, and instead sought to uplift yourself above your brethren by calling upon them some falsified condemnation. You should review the scriptures, read more fully the words of the prophets, and remember the counsel of the Lord: it is not man's place to judge. It is man's responsiblity to forgive and love, only God may pass judgement.

I think in the context of the "Passion" that this may be one of the "few exceptions"in which an R-rating may not aptly apply. But that is not for you to say. It is up to the individual to seek through prayer and prompting the correct course of action.

I hope that you may learn of this and turn from your path of spiritual cloudiness. None of the prophets of old, nor even the Savior, spoke with such smugness, nor did they attempt to bring down their brethren through subversive means.

I'm tired of Chet 19 Mar 2004
This is in response to the message "Whos tired of Chet". The messagewas great. I certainly am tired of him. There were some things on the mission that were hard to deal with, but one of the worst was self righteous people. Chet maybe you are better by not seeing the movie, But no one here really cares. Keep it to yourself.

The Passion Revisited 19 Mar 2004
Hello Again,

I apologize, I had previously stated that I would not return to this website, but the following occurrence has prompted a response.

I recently received the following e-mail....

"I'm just wondering... Did you get a special call from Christ to come and be a judge of others? I think you should worry about your own sins and realize that the jackass who judges others and points his finger always has four pointing right back at him. I don't really think Christ would approve for a gospel illiterate fool like yourself to come and judge others telling them they are wicked. You know, when you try to take over the role of Christ as our judge, that IS a big step to apostacy. You're treading in deep water. I don't believe we see our prophet going around telling members of the church who have seen "Passion of The Christ" that they are wicked. You're a complete hypocrite! And until you go see the movie for yourself...Shut your pie hole!"

This e-mail was not signed; I can only assume this e-mail came from Mr. Nathan T. Reese, looking at his latest posting. I just wanted to state again that whoever wants to watch the movie “Passion of Christ” is by all means free to do so. Don’t let me stop you. I was simply doing what you did on your mission, (or I think you did on your mission), informing people of potential pitfalls. Didn’t you try to teach people about the gospel, and how they can improve themselves? Live a higher law? Do we really need to be told every single thing we can, and can’t do? He that has to be commanded in all things is the same as a slothful and not a wise servant. Don’t get me wrong I have plenty of faults, but I don’t need you e-mailing me calling me judgmental when it seems that’s exactly what you were being in the e-mail above….You want to talk about hypocrites? It is obvious that you learned a great deal from your mission Mr. Reese.

“O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. 2 Nephi 9:28.

Just one last question…Do you think there is any particular reason that the modern day Prophets of God have said “don’t attend R rated movies”? This probably isn’t even about the rating of the movie…it is about OBEDIENCE. How willing are you to submit to the will of the Lord, or do you think you know what’s best. You have to choose; how close do you want to try and get to the edge, or how far can you keep from it.

What is this 18 Mar 2004
It's nice to be able to hear from all you boys... It's funny to see messages from those who do not even fall under the category of "Ilagan Alumni" to come on our website and make such pointless comments and try to play mediator. And, speaking of those comments from the Holier than Thou, I guess any of us who have seen "Passion of the Christ" are condemned. I think someone needs to study up on the topic of judgement.

And about "Passion of the Christ," my complements to Mel Gibson in his efforts to portray Christ's last days. What more could we want than for people who are not LDS to see this film and learn about Christ. Much good has and will come from the making of this film. This film definitely promotes believing in Christ, and opens doors to further missionary work.

I rest my case!

Rocky Mountain Woman! 12 Mar 2004
Hello JulieAnn! It's good to hear from you! I've been doing very good of late. I'm still in college, working on my bachelor's degree. I've changed majors too many times, but as I finally saw the real future I want, I have decided on accounting. I should be done in 1.5 years. As far as everything else, still dating and striving for temple marriage. I believe I'm getting close.

Take care!
