Served under President Joseph Childers, 1972--74. I arrived in Tahiti in March 1972. After spending about 8 weeks on Tahiti, I sailed on the Taporo II to Ra'iatea, then boarded Papa Imiura's boat for Tahaa. There I was christened "Maratini" and taught the beautiful language of Tahaa (as in "Eaha kera mea?") by the Teriipaia's, the Taari's the Tamehau's and many others. I left Tahaa about 6 months later and spent another 7 months in Uturoa. Thirteen months in paradise. After my mission, I began college at CCH (now BYU-Hawaii), where I met a beautiful 18-year old Tahitian named Hinano Mahuru (Natai Mahuru's prettiest daughter). We were married 6 months later. We moved back to the mainland, where I attended BYU-Provo, and taught at the MTC and helped Jim Wilson with his definitive Tahitian MTC Manual. Over the ensuing 15 or so years, we had six children (five boys and one girl), I left college, joined the Salt Lake City Police Department, went back to college and on to law school, quit |
