GA's and Bribing 11 Dec 2003
I was serving in the office with President Goodman. Several General Authorities had come to bangkok to do some training. There was a member of the general relief society presidency, a member of the general primary presidency, a member of the area presidency and the area president's wife. We were all in the mission van after a very long day at the Asoke chapel. We were all tired especially the GA's. They were staying at the Landmark hotel. From the Asoke chapel, that drive can take 15 minutes or on hour and a half. We were on pace to do an hour and a half. I told President Goodman that if we did an illegal U-turn we could get them to their hotel in under 20 minutes. He gave me the thumbs up and we went for it. As soon as I got the car straight again, there was a police officer waiting to pull us over. I rolled down my window and began speaking in English as we were always taught to do. This officer was very unkind and kept telling me to speak Thai. The other assistant passed some money to me and I casually displayed it to the officer. His dimeanor immediately changed. He made a sly move, took the money and yelled for us to go. As soon as we sped off, all of the GA's were commenting in how nice that officer was to let us off. They had no idea what we had just done. President came clean and told everyone what had just happened. They all laughed and were grateful that 200 baht was going to get them to their hotel rooms an hour earlier than expected. Only in Thailand.
