"I have attached a photo that they sent to the Missionaries in November of 1975. Their names were Glenn E. Nielson (26 May 1903 - 19 Oct 1998) and Olive W. Nielson (28 Jun 1906 - 18 Oct 2000). They were both from Canada but made their home in Cody Wyoming. They were married in the Cardston Alberta Temple on 25 Dec 1928. They served from about May or June of 1974 until May or June of 1977. Pres. Nielson was the retired owner of the Husky Oil Company and had a lot of money which he used very liberally for the missionary effort. I know that, among other things, he supplied a number of cars (Ford Pinto's) for the Mission out of his own pocket. He also initiated the first computerize missionary referral and investigator tracking system to be used in any mission. This was pre-home pc's so he leased time on larger computers and had missionaries in the Mission Home doing the input. Each week we would receive a print-out for our area that would track referrals and investigators progress. I also know that President Nielson was called to serve over 2 regions as an Regional Representative at the same time in Wyoming after he returned home from his mission. Keep in mind that he was close to 80 years old at the time. The fountain that is located behind the Church Office Building in SLC has a plaque on it that indicates that it was donated by Pres. and Sister Nielson. It is interesting to note that Sister Nielson passed away 1 day short of exactly 2 years after her husband."

President Nielsen served from July 1, 1973. The Mission Home was a large estate in Bethesda and the office staff lived there also. When he first went in he refurbished the whole office with all new equipment. He had a big Lincoln Continental and was always driven by the AP's . He sat in the back and the two elders in the front. His wife had a large Mercury station wagon. She let me drive it to the airport as I was returning home. Her last words to me in the mission field was, "Elder, please get a haircut
before you speak in your ward.". I just gotten a haircut that week, but it wasn't short enough for her... Before Pres. Nielsen we had President Ed Drury who was called as the first President of the Washington Temple immediately upon his release in July 1973. |
