In case you haven't already heard, President Grahl is not able to travel to Salt Lake City for the mission reunion due to work conflicts. He's hoping to arrive in December. More details to follow.

Hi everyone!
I just received my mission call on Wednesday, April 2! I'm so excited to be able to serve in which is undoubtedly the best mission on the face of this earth, the Brazil Recife Mission! I leave July 30 and was just wondering if there was any suggestions that the people who are serving there currently and have served there in the past on how to best prepare myself in the language (Portuguese obviously) and in the culture. I just want to know what it's like there, what to expect, how AMAZING the people are, etc... I would really appreciate any input you all might be able to give me! Thanks!

Recebi um e-mail de Presidente Grahl ontêm. Ele está animado para ter nossa reunião em abril 2008. Ele quer saber de VOCÊS qual dia seria melhor:
no dia 4 ou no dia 5 de abril.
Se faremos uma reunião no dia 4… possamos reunir na manha e depois almoçar no restaurante “Rodizios.” Talvez este dia não esteja muito bom prá muito gente quem tem trabalhar. (Liga no escritorio que você está doente naquele dia. Estou brincando. Hehe.) Se faremos nossa reunião no dia 5 … possamos reunir na noite depois Conferência Geral.
Presidente Grahl disse, “…tudo está bem com um ou outro dia e pergunte qual dos dois dias seria melhor para eles. Faremos no dia em que a maioria poderá estar presente OK!”
Já pedi nosso webmaster para botar essa pregunta sobre “poll” ou "pesquisas" em nosso website. Vamos decidir juntos para planejar essa reuniao. ;-)

O Distrito Caicó passou a Estaca no último domingo, dia 16/06. O Presidente da Estaca é o irmão Cláudio Vale de Araújo. Foi com muita alegria que recebi essa notícia...
Quando estive em Caicó em 1993, as reuniões eram em uma casa e existia apenas um Ramo, e agora já temos uma Estaca!!! E para minha alegria o Presidente da Estaca foi um fruto meu e de Sister Sinibaldi...
Nunca podemos dimensionar a extensão do trabalho que realizamos com a ajuda o Espírito Santo e principalmente de nosso Salvador Jesus Cristo.
Eu amo esse Evangelho e sou grato por ter servido uma missão...

Oi tudo mundo!
Recebi um email de President em abril. Ele e a familia dele estao otimos. A familia Grahl se mudou, President Grahl esta ensinando escola dominical, ele esta escrevindo um livro, e ele quer fazer um reuniao da missao em Utah em abril 2008 como o ultimo vez. (Ya-hoo!) No email ele disse:
"Como estou completando 50 anos, de experiência com a igreja e escrevi no meu diário desde garotinho, resolvi escrever um livro contando esse meio século de envolvimento e milagres como membro da igreja. Está sendo escrito em português, inglês e espanhol e pretendo fazer o lançamento em Salt Lake durante a conferência de abril no próximo ano. Se vocês entenderem que seria possível para vocês, que hoje tem família e tantas responsabilidades fazer uma reunião com nossos missionários como da última vez seria legal. Compartilhe a idéia com todo o pessoal que você tem contato e coloque no site da missão. Minha senha nunca funcionou para entrar nesse site, então toda vez que recebo um comunicado automaticamente de algum missionário eu respondo e entro em contato."
Entao, estou compartilhando essa idea com voces. Vamos fazer um reuniao em abril 2008! Sendo que estou em California, vou precisar ajudar de meus amigos em Utah. Me escreve com suas ideias. Ta bom?
And for the R.M.'s who might be rusty with reading Portuguese (espero que nao!) I'll summarize Pres. Grahl's email in a nutshell: the Grahl family is doing well, they moved, Pres. Grahl teaches Sunday School and loves it, he's writing a book about the miracles he has experienced during his lifetime which he's planning to publish in Salt Lake, and he wants to have a mission reunion (like the last one) in April 2008 during General Conference weekend. Being that I'm in California, I'll need help from all of you in Utah to get this mission reunion going. Send me your ideas! Thanks!

I know, I am an old-schooler (93-95), but I am heading back down to good old Recife in March for a big travel show that I am involved in. I hope to get to the temple. I wish I had more time to get to some of the areas I spent most of my time (Joao Pessoa and Natal) but I don't think it will happen. If anyone has been down lately and knows of some fun/interesting activities, I am all ears. Also (to anyone who is familiar), if you could choose between visiting Goiana, Caruaru, or Tamandare for a day, which one would you pick???

Hello Mae and E. Roberts,
Well... I was taking a look at the Walmart site and I think (99,9% of chance) that Walmart bought Bom Preco, since it is weird to see a supermarket site talking so well about another supermarket. As Mae gave you an advise, I will give another one: buy stuffs at mini markets, because they can have better prices. Here in US, Walmart has very good prices, however in Brazil Walmart/Bom Preco can be very expansive. I was there on April and I almost felt down when I saw the prices there.
Humm...another tip: When you take photos, write in the back the names, so you will be able to remember who is who and take a note of adresses and phone numbers o fthose who you really like. It will be helpfull if you got back after some years. I have some of addresses and that helped me a lot to find places, once places change and your memory is not so good after 9 years.
Sucess in your mission. You will love and they will love you.

Hey Elder Roberts,
What? Are you saying you *want* to get robbed in Recife? Just kidding -- but not really.
My intent is not to scare you - even I survived some funky areas - but to be practical. It has been 8 years since I served in Recife and 6 years since I was last there. During those times missionaries and travellers were strongly advised not to have flashy cameras or wear jewelry/watches that basically say, "Hey! Rob me!"
I doubt much has changed, but hey I can be completely wrong. My advice is to buy an inexpensive camera that takes 35mm film. (I know... cameras from the dinosaur age.) If your camera becomes lost or stolen ... no big deal. Also, you may have an easier time developing your pictures than trying to find a place to burn cds. Big cities in Pernambuco (the state) may have places to do that but if you are in the interior (aka places outside big cities) you might as well forget it. They either won't have the technology or you'll pay through the nose with your barely-enough-mesada. (It won't be worth it.) And to answer your question... Recife does not have a Walmart. The big stores are Carrefour and Bom Preco. Also there are plenty of lojas.
Don't worry so much about developing pictures. Go serve, work hard, and if worse comes to worst be glad to have a camera. :)

I didn't realize that you couldn't join Orkut unless you were invited. The disclaimer on the site says:

There is a site called www.orkut.com that is similar to www.myspace.com but is a favorite of Brazilians.
I have been amazed at the number of members from Natal, Recife, and Caico that I knew that I have been able to get in contact with again.
It is something interesting to check out if you are interested in seeing how some of the ward members are doing.

Overstock.com has a great new department: WORLDSTOCK
They have just started bringing handcrafts from Brazil and usually get sold out pretty fast.
Next week there will be a limited edition of the paintings of Luiz Mendes (Harvests of Brazil hardcover book). Each painting was painted individually and there will be only 20 available on site.
Don’t get used to the price you will see this time. The two paintings that will be sold this time are to promote the greeting cards (a new project) in the future.
Ok, how do I know all of that?
I am here in Brazil right now for Worldstock. Drinking Guarana and eating churrasco until my belly explodes! Oh yeah, and working of course…
