Violence in Leon pt. 2 14 Jan 2001
On the 25th, Elder Christensen and I came in for supper after a long afternoon. The Nicas were hard at work making their barricades in daylight. There was already a large amount of broken glass in the streets. After dinner it was getting dark and we prayed for protection as we were going out to appointments. Within 15 minutes, one of the most violent thunderstorms blew up that I have ever seen. The downpour was amazing. Water was flowing ankle deep through the streets. The water cleared the streets of most of the broken glass. This storm dowsed all outdoor activities for that evening except four idiotic missionaries out on the Lord’s business. I do consider that storm a miracle – it was unexpected. This also amuses me because 3 days earlier we prayed for the rain to stop so we would not get wet when returning to our proselytizing activities and the rain did stop. Another night we were on the street contacting people. In this area of town, all the dwellings were connected; there were no alleys or yards. The block was continuous building from corner to corner. It was a typical night – there were a number of people on the street. Doors and windows were open; people were visiting with friends. TVs and music was blaring from within the houses. A young boy ran around the corner and yelled “La Guardia, La Guardia!” Instantly the people disappeared from the street and everything became silent. All the doors and windows close in moments. I looked at my companion Elder Christensen for guidance and got a blank stare. We heard the engine of a military jeep approaching the street we were on. There was no place to go, no place to even hide. Fear is now beginning rise within me. Then, out of nowhere two hands grab each of us by the shoulder and pull us in just as the jeep rounds the corner. Everything is silent as the jeep patrols by. After the coast is clear, we thank our host and find out he is an inactive member of the church. We just happened to be standing in front of his house.
