State Track & Field Results

The state Track & Field competition concluded on May 25th. Curtis Walther of the Anchorage 6th ward and Chris McMullen of the Anchorage 8th ward were members of the winning boys team from Dimond.  Chris placed 6th place in the Shot put.  Curtis took 2nd place in the 400 meter sprint and was also a member of the team that took 2nd in the 1600 relay.

Here is a portion of the Daily News article about the win:

The Lynx ran Saturday, rolling up 80 points by scoring in eight of the 10 events in which they were entered. With just five events left they were in a fourth-place tie, but a 1-2 finish in the 400 meters by Chris Stovall and Curtis Walther vaulted them into the lead, and Dimond added another 28 points in the last four races to pull away from Palmer (57 points), Lathrop (50), North Pole (48) and Kodiak (39).

Stovall came from last place in the final 100 meters of the 400 to give the Lynx their only individual win. Dimond also got a win from its 800-relay team of Brett Denton, Chris Maslen, Stovall and Brandon Joseph.

In a last, desperate bid to beat Stovall in the 400, Walther threw himself headlong across the finish line and wound up with scrapes on the side of his face that nonetheless bore a wide smile.

"They tell us never to do that," Walther said of his coaches. "But I thought maybe they were wrong."
