Elder Jay Schlierman Obituary 02 Feb 2016
John Edward "Jay" Schlierman, Jr. was a passionate teacher, an avid historian and genealogist, and devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved baseball, especially the Dodgers and Angels, his alma mater, Brigham Young University, serving in his church, and most of all, his family. After a battle with liver disease, he passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his family on Monday, January 25, 2016 in Hollywood, CA, to begin his next calling in the spirit world.

Jay was born on Feb 2, 1959 in Roseville, CA. He grew up with a menagerie of animals, including his beloved dog, Bootsie. He graduated from Fairfax High in 1977 and served an LDS mission in Anchorage, AK from 1978-1980. He married his sweetheart, Cherie Elaine Sanders, on July 16, 1982 in the Los Angeles Temple and they raised three sons together in LA. A former Boy Scout, who attained the rank of Life and deeply loved the scouting program, he encouraged and helped each of his boys earn their Eagles. He also greatly valued education, and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. In his last years, as he worked towards a Masters degree in education, he worked as a substitute teacher, finally living his dream of leading a classroom. He was always happiest when he could share his pearls of knowledge and experience with those around him. In his eyes, everyone he met, no matter their background, was important and deserving of friendship. His neighbors in Inglewood, CA will miss seeing him stroll down the street, hands clasped behind his back, greeting everyone he passed with a smile and friendly joke. He touched the lives of many and will be lovingly remembered for his wonderful humor, witty intelligence and burning testimony of the Gospel.

Jay is survived by his cherished wife, Cherie, their three sons: Jason Martin (Lauri) Schlierman, John Edward “Eddie” Schlierman III, Christopher Franklin Schlierman; his beloved sisters: Nina (Don) Chase, Lisa Carter, and Diana (Jim) McCullough; many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, four “grand-pigs” (guinea pigs) and a “grand-puppy” named Bella, all who he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Schlierman, Sr. and Carol Elaine (McNary) Schlierman, and a plethora of pets eagerly awaiting his arrival at the Rainbow Bridge.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 2 at 10:00 am at the Inglewood Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 7515 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service. Jay will be laid to rest at Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, UT on Thursday, Feb 4, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Jay’s memorial fund to assist with funeral costs: www.gofundme.com/JayBird. Surplus will be donated to the humanitarian fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Special thanks to all who have assisted Jay’s family throughout this difficult time.
