Lanakila has a twin brother, Kapono, who will be serving in the Guatemala City North Mission. Their family lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. They both report to the MTC on the same date. He also has an older brother, Kaumana, serving in the Ivory Coast mission, who will return December 2003. He is the third of seven children. Both his parents served missions. His father Douglas Barton served in Hawaii and his mother Mele (Kalua'u) Barton served in California.
