Comments: I'm actually an RM that served in the Germany Frankfurt mission. But my grandmother was born in Slanica, Slovakia - a village now under Orava Lake NE of Zilina. (It was flooded along with 4 other villages when the communists built Orava dam in 1954.) In completing grandma's family history, I find most of our family were Tatra Highlanders (Gorale). In 1998 I started a group of folks researching their Tatra roots which has grown to about 600 now. (Our website's at www.e-TARG.org.) We've made four rewarding research trips to Slovakia and the Czech Republic since 1999. I also used to do translation work for President Phil Bryson back in the 80's and he has shared some info. I'm interested to know the Church has congregations not just in Bratislava, but deeper within the country as well. Thank you all for your missionary service there. And thank you for this website. I'm intersted in seeing the Book of Mormon translated into Slovak and more missionaries in that country, but don't know when that'll happen. |
