Ever forget how to use those cases in Slovak? I do sometimes. Forget online dictionaries for that. In fact, I couldn’t find one place online that has declensions in a handy chart like we used in the MTC. So, with out further ado…

Section 2 - Helpful Hints

Part 1 - Pronounciation
Part 1 is mainly for pre-missionaries or people who are trying to learn Slovak. If you already know the language, you can probably just skip this part.

Slovak is phoenetic. What you see is what you say. So, if I don't mention it here, you can pretty much guess that it's going to sound the way you think it should.
That said, let me introduce you to the vowels.
Vowel English Example Slovak Example
a ah as in father chlap
e eh as in men žena
o oh as in no okno
u oo as in shoe muž
i/y ee as in pizza cirkev
When a vowel has a dľžeň (meaning é,í,á,ý), it doesn't change the sound of the vowel. It simply elongates the vowel slightly. However an 'o' with a vôkaň (that symbol over the 'o') then the o starts with a w sound as if you were saying walrus.

There are a couple of other marks of which you should be aware. The mäkčeň for example (or ˇ that mark) softens consenants (ľ,š,č,ť,ž,ň,ď). In some cases, what this means in practical terms is that instead of forming the consenant with the tip of your tongue against the back of your teeth (say, "T, D, N"), you form it by bringing the middle of your tongue to the front of your mouth, right behind your teeth, and keep the front of your tongue down.

In other cases (C, S, Z), it turns the normal sound of the consenant into other sounds that we are familiar with. Č is equivilant to the English CH sound. Š is equivilant to SH. And Ž is equivilant to the 's' sound in the word pleasure.

You will also see Ľ. This is not a sound we make in English although it is very close to the Italian gli. It is made by pulling the tip of the tongue back to the middle-back of your mouth when you make the L.

A couple more tips:
  • ch is one letter in Slovak. When you see them together, they are always pronounced like the ch in Loch Ness in the back of your throat.
  • ä is pronounced like an e (eh).
  • c is pronounced ts like the sound in pizza
  • j is pronounced yeh like in the word yak

Part 2 - Pronounciation Problems

There are some words in Slovak that missionaries constantly mispronounce. These are some I’ve noticed. If you have more, let me know and I’ll add them here.

  • Zhromaždenie (meeting)– not skromaždenie
  • Čokoláda (chocolate)– not čakoláda like you would say in English
  • Nádej (hope)– not nadeje
  • Namestie (town square)– not naměstie – this was mainly an issue among missionaries coming to Slovakia from the Czech Republic. Now that missionaries are going directly to Slovakia, this should take care of itself.
  • learn the difference between včera (yesterday), večer (evening), and večera (supper).
  • and between obed (lunch) and obeť (sacrifice).

Section 3 - Missionary Helpers

Part 1 - Nauky a Zmluvy Oddíel 4 D&C Section 4

1. Teraz pozri, nadherne díelo je pripravené aby vzíšlo medzi detmi človeka.
2. Preto, ó vy ktorí vstupujete do služieb Boha, usilujte sa aby ste mu slúžili celým svojím srdcom, mocou, mysľou, a silou, aby ste mohli stáť bez poškvrny pred Bohom v posledný deň.
3. Preto, ak mate túžbu, slúžiť Bohu, ste povolaní k tomuto dielu.
4. Lebo pozrite, pole je už pripravené na žatvu a kto bude žať s plným úsilím, ten zhromaždí zásobu aby nezahynul ale aby ziskal spasenie pre svoju dušu.
5. A viera, nádej, milosrdenstvo, a láska, a oko upriamené na slávu Božiu, robia ho schopným no toto dielo.
6. Pamätajte na vieru, cnosť, vedmosť, striedmosť, trpezlivosť, bratskú láskavosť, bohabojnosť, milosrdenstvo, pokoru, usilovnosť.
7. Proste a dostanete, klopte a bude Vám otvorene. Amen

Part 2 - Zastava Pravdy The Standard of Truth

Naši misionári prichádzajú k rôzným národom. Zastava Pravdy bola vztýčená. Žiadná nesvätá ruka nemôže zastaviť túto prácu v postupe. Prenasledovanie môže zúriť, davy sa môžu spájať, armady sa môžu zhromažďovať, a falošné obvinenia hanobiť, ale pravda Božia pôjde vpred smelo, ušľachtilo a nezávisle až prenikne na každý kontinent, dosiahne každé podnebie a zaplaví každú krjinu a zaznie do každého ucha, až kým zámery Božie budu dosiahnuté a Veľký Jehova povie: Práca je Vykonaná.
                                             --Joseph Smith
