Once a Missionary, Always a Missionary 22 May 2002
I had an amazing experience a couple of weeks ago which brought back my memories of being a missionary. I currently work for Pharmanex (NuSkin Enterprises) as an executive assistant in Research and Development. I supposed you could say my job description includes everything and anything. Two weeks ago, our company held it's annual Scientific Advisory Board meeting and I was put in charge of the details like selecting and scheduling the hotel, travel arrangements, food, etc. The company is currently looking at a possible idea for a new product which would be the first of it's type on the market. As a result, 7 of the world's leading scientists on the subject were invited to attend and present on their particular viewpoint relating to the concept. In addition to our guests, we also had five of our international SAB able to attend the meetings to contribute. My instructions were simple, the meeting was to be nice, in elegant surroundings, but the leaders wanted a casual atmosphere that would lend itself to questions and discussion. After our meetings of the first day. We arranged for a private dinner party in the hotel restaurant to give everyone a chance to mingle and talk. Of the 25 or so people attending, only three were members of the LDS church. My good friend, Jenny (who works in our special events department) and one of our staff scientists. Dinner went very smoothly and those whom I was sitting with enjoyed a varied and interesting conversation. Eventually, the subject of mormons came up. The visiting guests and SAB members asked questions about our beliefs and shared theirs. Eventually they began asking very specific questions, some concerning deep doctrine. It was amazing, I automatically shifted into what I call my "missionary mode" of simple explanations surrounding the many questions my dinner companions had about the church. I shared many experiences from my mission and helped everyone to better understand more about our church. Two hours later, I looked around the room and realized that everyone was listening to me! I was amazed, not only that they were all interested in what I was saying, but moments later, one of my collegues said something to the effect of, "If you ever want to know about the LDS church, ask Jeanne. She is the best person I know to explain." Several other compliments followed, being topped off by one gentleman who told me that I should talk about the church as my full time job. My reply? I reminded him of the stories I told about my mission and explained that what I had been doing for the last two hours, was what missionaries did full time. My last words were... "Once a missionary, always a missionary!" Later, two of the visiting guests and SAB members requested copies of the book of mormon. Which I promptly mailed, after marking a few key scriptures and including a personal note of testimony! Hopefully, these men and their families will talk with the missionaries in their own countries and investigate further!
