Dear Friends,
It is Tuesday the 6th. I have a little time this morning before I will go with President Sutekat to visit more of the members. I will continue with the stories of those that I have previously visited:
Brother Kadarisman is in the branch Presidency here. His house is far out in the rice padi. The main walls of the house have large cracks but none have fallen and the roof is in tact. He has a second story room on his house. This room is almost falling down. The walls are broken up but still standing. He was in his house when the quake hit and he saw the walls swaying back and forth violently and breaking. He moved toward the front door but it opened then closed on it’s own. This frightened him so he went out through the back door. His back yard is surrounded by a wall. The wall was also swaying back and forth when he got out. He was thinking, this is the day I will die. After the quake he called some people he knew to ask forgiveness because he was still feeling he might die on this day. The ones he could not reach he prayed for. I asked him how he is feeling now. He told me that he is still not sleeping well. He sleeps in the front part of his garage and is always ready to get up and dash out if he feels any movement. He describes himself has having fikiran susah and bingung (confusion of mind and difficulty sorting his thoughts). That seems to sum up the mental condition of most everyone who experienced the quake. Even those who had no harm to themselves or property.
Next we went to the home/store of Brother Joko Siwanto Prajoko and family. He is still running the store but not sleeping there. His children are staying at relatives. The main damage to his home is high in the walls near the ceiling. Cracks in the structure, especially the joints and corners. The ceiling is also sagging in places.
Next we went to the home of Brother Sudiraharjo. There are cracks in the walls and the house is leaning. I expect this house will need to be mostly rebuilt or all rebuilt. Sister Sudiraharjo gave a harrowing story in testimony meeting about her children 3 and 7. She gathered the three year old but her son was about 100 meters away down the street. When she went to find him she found a neighbor holding a badly injured boy. When she asked if it was her son she was told yes. It actually was not her son and a moment later he was found unhurt. They slept outside for three nights but now are situated at relatives.
The next house is one of the two that were completedly knocked down. It is the house of the family of brother Sugeng Peribadi. This is a large house in the countryside. Some parts of the house are standing. You can see a doorway still standing but most of it is totally a pile of rubble. The whole family was in the house at the time the quake struck and it is a miracle that all escaped without injury. When you look at the house you think anybody in there at the time of the quake must have died. Sister Peribadi describe grabbing the children but not being able to stand up because of the quake and trying to get to the door to get out. Brother Peribadi was in another room and got out himself before the house fell. When they got out of the house they and all the neighbors ran up the mountain in the back fearing a tsunami. They are now sleeping outside under a tarp.
We visited two other damaged homes today that I will write about tomorrow. I am in Solo tonight having traveled here this afternoon with President Subandriyo and Brother Flake who is from Church headquarters. There is much work going on here also at the church to prepare and ship supplies just as in Jogja but not as much material is kept at the church.
I served for six months in each of these cities and I am working along side many of those who I taught and baptized here and their children. I wish that I could find words to describe my feelings of being with them and working along side them in these circumstances. You know how you feel when you work on the church farm with the brothers and sisters in your ward? Take that feeling and apply it to those people with whom you shared the gospel and you will begin to know how I feel today.
This morning when I went to the church in Jogja I found President Dadang Subriyadi there looking somewhat worn and very sweaty. I asked him what he had been doing. He could only sleep for one hour so he had been working all night preparing shipments of goods for the next day. President Subriyadi does not live here. He is the president of the Magelang branch and came here to volunteer. If Wayne Jones reads this, he wants to sampaikan salam from he and his wife.
Until tomorrow,
Chuck Lambson
