1997 Nov 17 Saudara-saudariku terkasih, It is always a feeling of joy and gratitude to share with you what we are doing in building the kingdom of the Savior in the beautiful inslands of the sea-Indonesia. The Surakarta known as Solo district conference was on last Saturday and Sunday. I left a day earlier to do some businesses. My assistants, two great missionaries drove me to the airport. I was sitting at the back seat. Seeing these two future leaders in front of me, my heart was full of joy. I feel good to know that they Church will keep growing and save in the future in the hands of these young men and others who committed themselves to the serve the Lord and live by his teachings. I flew to Jogyakarta and accompanied by two missionaries and Brother Sudiyo drove our little van, we continued my jourvey to visit a Brother, Brother Supriyono baptized in 1972 by Elder George Groberg who live near Borobudur Temple (Elder Groberg, he wrote you a letter from France at the time you were going to get married). Since he lives about one half hour from the nearest chapel (Yogyakarta), he could not come to church regularly. We share testimony and the scriptures and continue our visist to Magelang. Magelang is a city between Yogyakarta and Semarang. The Church has approved a branch to be organized in Magelang, but the people there does not allow us to have a chapel. We will keep trying. We visited three families. One particular family has six small children and their father is working in Jakarta, they live in a simple life. We sang and prayed, and my heart full of compassion. I know that only the gospel of Jesus Christ will give them hope and peace and hoping for a better world in the future (Ether 12:4) We left Magelang at 17:30 and in the middle of the rice farm we had flat tire. We were in Yogyakarta about 19.00. Sister Bambang, helped me to see the Vice Rector of Gajahmada University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Boma WikanTyoso, Msc. Brother Don Holsinger, the Director of the David M. Kennedy Int'l Studies at BYU has asked me if I could assist the meeting appointment between him and senior faculty at the Gajahmada. I was able to get confirmation from him that the university is willing to meet Bro. Holsinger in January, and he will send a letter of confirmation to BYU. I returned to the hotel at 22.00. Saturday morning, I went to see Brother Doddy Yudhabuntara, now is a doctor of Vet Surgeon. He was one of the early local missionaries served in Indonesia. He went to Germany to get his doctorate degree, married non member and became inactive...It's sad, is't it!! I feel he knows the Church is true, I have hope for him to come back and build the kingdom, I do not know when, but I have hope. He is such a nice man. Solo conference was great. Our mission Presidency and wives came. Members took buses to the conference. Seeing their anthusiasm to come the the conference is building my testimony and faith.Many ladies wore their traditional sarong and Javaness hair style. They look pretty. Every speaker gave their inspirational talk and testimony. Sister Hasibuan is taking chemotherapy right now, but she made the effort to come and bore her testimony. She is wonderful women. I saw many old friends came to the conference. All members from Magelang came on a small van. They must left Magelang at 6.30 AM. We have new district presidency called. Pres. Soewito from Yogyakarta is our new district president, with Febri Hariyadi first counselor, and Sugiyarto second counselor. Bro. Tommy Simanungkalit was called to be the Executive Secretary. E/S Richards were in Semarang and Solo conducted the English teacher's training and starting the classes. Well, it's late tonight. I know the gospel is true...yes it is true.
