Selamat malam from Jakarta, I attended an Area Training meeting with Elder Eyring in Hong Kong Last week end. I feel edified to do a better service to my brothers and sisters in and out side the Church. I am reminded that the purpose of my calling as servant of the Lord is to bring greater spirituality to the members, connect them to the Father, the Savior and the Holy Ghost. We are also taught about temporal self reliance of the members. Both responsibilies remind me two scriptures sunk deep into my heart a few weeks before I began my call. Helaman 5: 12 as my guide in my spiritual responsibility, and Alma 10:4 for my temporal responsibility. The Church is growing slowly. We hope to add 3 new branches next year. The Lord bless us with more new members this year. However, compare to our population, we should be able to find more people to listen to our message. The number of local missionaries are going down to 29 as of today. 3 are leaving on 12 November, we hope to have 4 new missionaries in the end of November.
A few months ago, I mentioned to you about a mushrooms farming's project that we introduced to some of the members for commercial purpose. A month ago, Brother Eddy Prayitno, who is currently the branch president in Surabaya Timur branch came to Jakarta and spent 3 days at the mushrooms farm located in Tambun, Bekasi, West Java to learn. Last week I went to Surabaya and visited his mushrooms greenhouse pilot project behind his home in Sidoarjo, southern suburb of Surabaya. Today, I got a call from him to let me know that his pilot project is very succesful. He has harvested three days in a row for 10 pounds every morning and share it with his neighbors and members. He is going to continue harvesting for about two or three months. Thanks to the Lord for his blessings. With this success, several brethren (Togar Sibuea, Sugiarto Hendro (from Jakarta), Lie Tjen Giong/Adrian Hendrawan, Go Soen Tjiang, and Eddy Prayitno (from Surabaya) will get together soon and prepare a business plan for a larger farm. We have heard from the farmer in Bekasi that the type of mushrooms we planted is exported to Taiwan and Hong Kong. We should contact our friends in Taiwan and Hong Kong once the larger farm is producing. While in Surabaya last week, I also visited a return missionary who has just opened a "Siomay" stand for about a week. Siomay is one type of chinese dim sum. Steffi taught him to make siomay a while ago. A small capital was lended to him to make wooden cart for his stand. Now, I saw him stand tall, his self confidence returned, a brighter future await him if he continue to be faithful, hard work and expand his business in a larger degree. Last week in our mission presidency meeting, attended by two of the district presidents from Central and East Java, concluded that there are at least 3 factors for our success:
1. Blessings from Heaven.
2. Hard Work.
3. Skills.
In addition to our spiritual responsibility to the members, we committed to teach and provide ways to the members to acquire those three factors.
Elder/Sister Bowen from the Area Welfare Services came to see us today, and we are making plans to do it in the near future. I am grateful for many brothers and sisters who are willing to work hand in hand in helping the saints to be self reliance both in their spiritual and temporal needs. Thank you for all of you who continually prayer for the saints and the people of Indonesia.
Our mission song composed by Randy Morris twenty years ago still true..."The darkness has been lifted, never to return, truth forever more"
Sampai jumpa!!!
