Gunawan Tjokrokusumo, known to his friends as Gwan passed away on November 19,1999 at 2:20 p.m. in Provo, Utah of cardiac arrest.
Gwan was bornJanuary 9, 1999 in Malang, Indonesia. He attended parochial school in Malang. After graduation he enrolled in medical school. Soon after the death of his mother, Gwan became a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He came to America in 1973 and lived in Pasadena, California for a short time. He later enrolled at Brigham Young University. He received a BA degree in Communications in 1982. Gwan went on to earn a Masters in Public Administration in 1984 and a Masters in Organization Communications in 1988 at BYU.
During his education Gwan took an extended leave and returned to Indonesia. While there he was employed as a journalist and provided service to the LDS church. He returned to America by enrolling at the church school in Hawaii where he made many friends. Gwan soon transferred to BYU in Provo, Utah where he completed his work on his degrees.
As a student Gwan supplemented his income by working for BYU Laundry Services. After college Gwan obtained employment as a Human Resources Representative 1989-92, a Social Services Assistant 1990-92, a Culinary Instructor for Orem Community Education 1993-95, and a Order Resolution Specialist for Nu Skin Enterprises from 1993 until the present. Nu Skin became a place of great devotion and appreciation for Gwan. He often commented on how much he enjoyed working with the tremendous people at Nu Skin.
Gwan was a faithful member of the church and held several church callings including ward pianist and home teacher. In 1983 he was called to serve as a coordinator for language interpretation by the Presiding Bishopric. Gwan aided in the translation of General Conference talks, publications and assisted Indonesian members while they attended the temple.
Gwan will be remembered by his friends for his exceptional culinary skills. He was a great chef and a talented pianist. Gwan also had a wonderful sense of humor. He delighted in children and enjoyed giving service to the poor and needy. On many occasions Gwan donated his food and cooking talents to those in need. To those who were fortunate enough to have Gwan as a friend his unique and amazing personality will be greatly missed.
Gwan was proceeded in death by his father and mother Dr. and Mrs. Wibowo Tjokrokusumo formally of Malang, Indonesia. He is survived by his brother and sister in-law Dr. and Mrs. Wijoyo Tjokrokusumo and his Step-mother Lieke Tjokrokusumo who all currently live in Jawa, Indonesia.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 24th at Orem Suncrest 6th Ward 100 North 900 West, Orem, Utah. Services will begin at 2:00 p.m.. Viewing one hour prior to the funeral service
