Friends,
I'm sure most of you have heard of the passing of President Gordon B. Hinkley at 7:00 pm Utah time tonight. We heard about it right after Jack Christiansen, noted author and teacher, spoke to our youth about being Steadfast and Immovable. There were many tears shed, and plenty of reminiscing about his faithful life capped with his ultimate service as a counselor to several Church Presidents. One might have expected that when President Hinkley became the President of the Church, that we would not notice much of a difference, but such is not the case. No President of the Church has presided over the building and dedication of so many temples since time began. I don't think any President has travelled more, even at his advanced age. Working in the Family and Church History department, the evidence of his personal concern for reducing temple ordinance duplication, of getting members more interested in this work of salvation, and freeing spirits from prison were manifest all around. I never personally met him in the years I have been there. I didn't feel a compulsion to do so. It was enough that I can be involved in a work that a Prophet of our God has made so abundantly clear that we must do, and who was personally involved with and directed the spirit of it.
We'll miss President Hinkley's incredible talent and leadership. I mourn for his passing, but am none-the-less light-hearted in the knowledge that I have lived to see such a man graduate from the school of mortality with great honors. I can only imagine the reception that he is presently getting on the other side. He has clearly earned a place among all the noble and great ones of all dispensations. What a time for us to live in!
Best Wishes,
Dave Brewer
