Friends,
Elder Glenn Roberts emailed me today to say that he had received a message from President Budi Susanto, Solo Tengah Branch that Sister Suwando (Swandha Agni) 84 years old, passed away. I will always remember Sister Suwandha. When I was Group Leader there in 1973, she was instrumental in getting the sisters of the group (before it became a branch) organized. I remember her strong and halus personality. She taught me to read and understand Javanese, and I still have many Javanese recipes and writings from her. She translated some of the missionary discussions into Javanese as well. I've seldom seen anyone with such consistent faith. Even for one with deep Javanese heritage, she was a humble follower of Jesus Christ.
One story I'll share that some will remember. As with some other places in the mission, we sometimes had problems with negative gossiping by members of our group. One Sunday, I told the members that we need to reform ourselves so that we don't serve the adversary with our words. I suggested that whenever we are talking to one another and begin to speak negatively about someone, that we quickly place our hand over our mouth so that everyone in the group will understand that we need to change the subject. I remember not long after that talk looking over at a group of sisters talking together with Sister Suwandha (which was a common thing since she was so highly respected). She looked at me and back at her sisters and placed her hand over her mouth. I was deeply moved at the example she was setting, and it made a big difference among all of our members.
Sister Suwandha will always occupy a special place in my heart, and I am sure that she has a wonderful reunion with her loved ones.
