The Indonesian Mission was part of the Singapore Mission when Sister Warren and I assumed the presidency of the Singapore mission, in July of 1994. It remained as part of our mission, until we were able to convince the Brethren in Salt lake, that it was once again OK to try Indonesia as a separate mission, This had been done twice before, and failed. Each time it failed on it's own, it was rolled back into the Singapore Mission.

Therefore, the Brethren were very reluctant to try again, with out considerable thought and prayer. In the summer of 1995, at a meeting in Hong Kong, I once again presented the proposition that it be allowed to try again on it's own. The Apostle in attendance at that time was Elder Holland. He thoughtfully listened to my story, Elder John Carmack, the Area President, and my priesthood file leader, was also in concurrence with my recommendation. Elder Holland agreed, with a great deal of reluctance, to carry the recommendation back to the Brethren in Salt Lake City. My Apostolic leader at that time, and in charge of all of the Asian area, was Elder Wirthlin. We had previously discussed the issue, when he had last visited our Mission, and he agreed , that perhaps Indonesia was strong enough again, and the Singapore Mission was so HUGE, that it would help Singapore Mission significantly to not have the additional, and very weighty responsibility for Indonesia, in addition to the rest of South Asia, all the way to Pakistan on the West, For these two reasons, he supported the change. We heard back from SLC in a few months their decision to split Indonesia off, and to call as the new President of the Indonesian Mission, a couple who had earlier that year, come into the Singapore Mission as medical missionaries. They had been called to work with the Hospital and University in Jakarta, Elder and Sister Tueler. They were an excellent choice, they were already in place in Jakarta, and they agreed to stay for the remainder of their original two year assignment. Bros Subandriyo, who had been my counselor in Indonesia, continued to work with the Tuelers, and then later became the Mission President himself. Another excellent call.

Sister Warren and I hope this will clarify the transition from the Singapore Mission, to becoming once again, it's own stand-alone, and very successful Mission. We were the Indonesian Mission Presidency for approximately 1 1/2 years-1994/1995. We really loved and admired the great saints in Indonesia, and thoroughly enjoyed working with them.

Yours Truly,

Carl D. Warren
