Why do you need my personal information? |
We ask that you provide personal information when registering because it is useful to us for several reasons.
The first is legitimacy and for users security. We screen for fraudulent entries. It is a good way to screen for people who would want to register and exploit the message board, post inappropriate images, or be able to "spam" the alumni. Due to the tight controls on unsolicited email, we need to ensure that all account holders are legitimate. This is in the interest of all of our users. Including an address and phone number in their profile means they are serious about participating in the alumni site and are not likely to abuse the site or harass other registered users.
The webmaster/site maintainer reserves the right to use contact information when deemed necessary or appropriate to comply with applicable laws, rules, or lawful orders of courts and governmental agencies, to protect third parties from what we regard as threats of serious harm.
Second, we may need to contact you if we have any questions about the data you enter into your profile. It's simply another measure of validity. Be assured that we will not distribute your personal information to any third party without your written consent.
I can think of many other benefits from having your address available, like being able to receive/mail wedding announcements or cards from people in the mission who may not have email, or simply would prefer to send a letter or card to stay in touch. For the alumni or just called missionary, they may see an address that coincides with their college or town, and they did not know that a member of their mission was also in their area.
Also, many mission presidents use this as a means of keeping in touch with their alumni. It is an instant, and up-to-date address book for them, some of which may not be email savy and prefer to use snail mail or pickup the phone to contact returned missionaries. Postal mailing addresses can be more permanent for some alumni than an e-mail address. About 1/3 of registered alumni don't have a valid e-mail address.
Thirdly, to make use of certain features on our website, such as posting pictures, stories, messages, news, live chat, and other interactive forums, visitors need to register and to provide personal information as part of the registration process. Registered users are accountable for the content they submit to the site and abiding by applicable laws and rules. Even if you want to remain completely anonymous, you're still free to take advantage of the wealth of content available on our site without registration. The vast majority of our site does not require visitors to complete a registration form or give us contact information.
Out of respect for their privacy, we have allowed registered users the option to not display their personal information to any registered or non-registered visitors.
