| What Is a Friend? What is a friend? A friend is a bit of heaven lent to us to make earth better place in which to live. He is a mirror which reflects a true picture of ourselves, unclouded and untouched. He is a window through which we see the world as it is, both the good and bad of it. A friend has all the beauty of the most beautiful rose, yet when left uncared for and neglected, slowly fades and dies. He has the strength one finds in a towering tree, but he, too, has to have regular nourishment for normal growth. Always in motion, he is much like the ocean, both feeding many smaller rivers and receiving the water which pours forth them. A friend is a forgotten path in the woods, stumbled upon quite by accident, but when followed, leads to the most attractive and restful place in the world. He has the wisdom of the ages, the patience of Job, the courage of David and the leadership of Moses. Yet he is just as human and just as sensitive as we are. He is expected to hear our troubles, solve our problems, understand and supply our needs, realize our faults but forgive and overlook them, accept our rebuffs and then love us in spite of it all. He is abused, misused, ignored, forgotten, and even cursed at times. But when the truth is revealed he is the most need, most sought after and most loved of all God's creations... His beauty is as lasting as eternity, his smile sheds more light and warmth than does the sun, and his unspoken manner says, "I love you" much like the quiet benediction of a prayer. -Lo Rue Sanders | |
