Stories: Branch Picnic

The weather is very, very hot. It was 105 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, July 5, 2002. That has been the hottest day so far this summer. We were at a branch picnic that day. Everyone was swimming and having a good time. Elder Sommerfeldt and I just sat in the shade as best we could. It was fun. They killed a sheep, skinned it, cut it up and cooked it right there at the picnic. It was all right but the meat was not very lean. They cooked it just like a tinfoil dinner. First, they made a big fire and added lots of rocks. When the rocks got hot they put them in a metal pot with all the meat, potatoes and water. Then, they sealed the pot and set that in the fire. It was pretty good. It is Naadam, the Mongolian independence holiday, which means that most of our investigators are out of town or just too busy to meet with us. No one at all would meet with us on Saturday, July 6 or Sunday, July 7 because it was the Darkhan Naadam festival. Everyone was at the horse races and the wrestling competitions, so we went and watched and talked to people. Next weekend is the big Naadam festival in Ulaanbaatar, so many people have already gone to the city to be with their family and see the festivities. Darkhan is actually quite empty right now, but some families are still around. -Elder Isaac Solmes |
