Richard Van Orden remebers Martinez 30 Dec 2009
Dear Wayne and others of the Northern Far East Mission Family: I too have lasting memories and great love for Elder Steve Martinez! We were fellow missionaries though not companions in Niigata during 1967 after the earthquake along with Elders Ishikawa, Miller, and my companion Elder Richard Tipton, Elder Martinez was such a sincere and humble missionary, who slept in the futon near me. Wow, does this bring back poignant memories of kneeling in prayer together and pleading with the Lord to strengthen and bless us in sharing the gospel. I am thrilled to know of Steve's family, his courage with Parkinson's Disease of which my beloved uncle also just died, and his productive life and Church service. As we begin this new decade, I send along to all via this note my personal appreciation for your supreme service to the beloved Japanese people, including a few with whom I still have contact, and specifically my gratitude to the Martinez family for loving and blessing the life of my friend Steve!! With great love and gratitude to all associated in any way with the Church in Japan, Elder Richard Van Ordenoriginally from Libertyville, Illinois, but now living in Hilliard, Ohio

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
