IRON ROD
September 2007

Dear Missionaries,
Recently we had the opportunity to meet with Elder Chad Richardson, our Area Authority Seventy. He counseled us concerning a new emphasis being placed on "ward missions." He was trained by Elder L. Tom Perry, Elder Neil Andersen, and Elder Richard Hinckley, who have been called to head the Church's Missionary Department. Their vision is to get members to more fully participate in the missionary effort throughout the world. They would like to see wards creating not only mission plans but ward area books so their missionary efforts can be tracked and improved. Once again we heard from Elder Richardson that President Hinckley feels he cannot face the Savior until he has inspired the members of the church to double the number of convert baptisms throughout the world. Elder Perry says that we need to change the culture or mind-set in every ward or branch. We must create excitement and we must help others take ownership for results. Every activity should involve non-members, less-actives, and recent converts. He gave us several examples, such as asking non-members to sing in the ward choir or participate in service projects. We must build and promote the understanding that every ward, quorum and auxiliary in the ward will baptize.
They are stressing better organizing for success. Each stake president must train and commit the bishop to his role as mission president of his unit. The stake president calls a high councilor over missionary work who loves missionary work, is an excellent teacher and thoroughly knows "Preach My Gospel". He would be responsible for the training of ward mission leaders and high councilors who are assigned to specific wards or branches. These high councilmen over the wards would then train the Elders' Quorum presidents and High Priest group leaders. Ward missionaries must be trained to help members experience success at ever higher levels. Stake presidents and bishops are to set goals in the five key indicators. Stake presidents will report quarterly to Elder Richardson on their progress.
The Elders' quorum, the High Priests' group and the five auxiliaries (Primary, Young Men and Young Women, Relief Society, Priesthood and Sunday School) each prayerfully select five or more individuals, less actives and non-members to be taught by the full time missionaries in the homes of members and involved in rewarding activities. That would be thirty-five people for each missionary companionship to teach at a time!
What can we do to help with this plan? We must increase our faith so that we can baptize every week. We must raise our expectation level. The key to our success is that we work as a team with the members of the wards and branches in which we serve. We are excited about this new emphasis on every member becoming involved in missionary work. We must continue to help teach them how they can do so successfully.
This work is true. We love you and we love the Lord. We fell, as does Elder Perry, that "this is a battle we _will_ win!"
With love,
President and Sister Seal

Hard Work + Faith = Baptisms

To Our Great OTM Missionaries,

When building a home, would you enjoy using only one tool? When choosing a food, do you want only one option? When painting a picture would you like to use only one color? Neither do our investigators! We need many tools to build the kingdom of God on the earth, many options to feed His sheep, a wide variety of teachings to paint the picture of the truthfulness of this gospel. We can not do the same things over and over again. Monotony leads to boredom, wasted time, and no success.
Moroni, a successful leader, understood the importance of innovation. As he "altered the management of affairs(Alma 49:11)," of war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, he and his people were blessed greatly. Moroni was so innovative that at times they didn't know what to name his ideas, "Moroni, had prepared his people with. . . shields to defend their heads (Alma 43:19)."
As we follow our innovative leaders President and Sister Seal we will continue to be blessed as missionaries. We have all already witnessed miracles from the Power Hour. If you haven't seen them you haven't been looking! Average new investigators found weekly have increased dramatically. Let each of us implement and experiment on the many ways we have to find investigators to teach. Have you tried to find investigators using the many different ways in Preach My Gospel (p. 167)? There are many different ways not even listed on that page.
May the Lord bless each of us as we use the many tools He has given us to find His children He has prepared. As we apply His tools given to us with all our might we will Orchestrate The Miracle and double convert baptisms.
Love, Elder Smith and King

In Memory
Some of us are naturally reserved and timid about bearing our testimony with words. Perhaps we should not be so timid. The Doctrine and Covenants tells us, “But with some I am not well pleased, for they will not open their mouths, but they hide the talent which I have given unto them, because of the fear of man” (D&C 60:2). When we do bear testimony, we should testify with a spirit of humility. Section 38 of the Doctrine and Covenants reminds us, “And let your preaching be the warning voice, every man to his neighbor, in mildness and in meekness” (D&C 38:41).

Perhaps we do not always remember that it is the power of the Spirit that carries our testimony into the hearts of others. Our testimony is our own. It cannot be challenged by someone else. It is personal and real to us. But it is the Holy Spirit that gives a similar witness to another.
Pres. Faust

Two missionaries from Idaho are spending time in West Plains as they share the message from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Patrick Van Hoose, left, Coeurd'Alene, and Carston Mellies, Boise, are on two-year missionary trips. They said they will spend from six weeks to six months in various locations, including West Plains.
