Oklahoma Tulsa Mission February, 2010
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
In our most recent General Conference
President Thomas S. Monson repeated the request that
Church members’ “faith and prayers continue to be offered in behalf of those areas where our influence is limited and
where we are not allowed to share the gospel freely at this time.” (Ensign, November 2009) The power of such prayers cannot be underscored enough. We remember well President Spender W.
Kimball’s plea to the Church in the mid 1970’s to pray for this very thing and his matter-of-fact announcement that the gospel would soon
go to the people behind the Iron Curtain. We doubted that we would live to see that day but were strengthened in faith and testimony of the
living prophets when the Berlin Wall began to come down in 1989 and the gospel then began to be preached to nations theretofore closed
to us. When Amulek boldly stood before the people of Ammonihah he declared, “That if it were not for the prayers of the righteous, who are now in the land, that ye would even now be visited with destruction; it is by the prayers of the
righteous that ye are spared.” (Alma 10:22-23)
Our prayers may take on greater significance
when viewed in the light of Amulek’s statement. Do our prayers
really have the power to spare the lives of others, to save them from
destruction?
In His preface to the Doctrine and Covenants the Savior
announced, “I, the Lord, knowing the calamity that should shortly
come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph
Smith, Jun. and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him
commandments. And also gave commandments to others that they
should proclaim these things unto the world.” D&C 1:17-18) Though
A Band of Brotherhood--
Teaching a More Excellent Way
the earth has been visited by many calamities since that announcement, the true calamity is that “there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it.” (D&C 123:12)
How quick we turn to God in prayer when calamities strike. We have lifted our voices in prayer with millions of others as we watched the moving footage of the destruction in Haiti caused by a devastating earthquake. We were especially touched by scenes of suffering little children and have prayed mightily for efforts to bring them relief. We pray that their lives can be spared and we pray that they can soon be reunited with family members who can care for them and restore happiness to them again.
What a great opportunity is ours to be a part of the salvation of the earth’s people through this simple act of faith called prayer. As we petition our Heavenly Father to soften the hearts of the leaders of nations we are helping to fulfill the vision of ancient prophets who saw the gospel moving through the earth in the latter days. The prayer of the righteous, in the sense of saving souls from spiritual destruction, then becomes an integral and essential part of the latter-day work of filling the whole earth with the message of the Restoration. Our prayers are but a prelude to the miracles that then occur by the hand of God to allow the Church and its influence for good to penetrate borders and reach those who have been “kept from the truth because they know not where to find it.”
As missionaries you remember your investigators and all whom you teach in each of your prayers. We are impressed by that, impressed by your examples of prayerful persistence. May we remember, as well, to pray in public and in private that the influence of the Church may reach all nations to bring that spiritual relief that will ensure that individuals world-wide are happy in their homes, are linked to their generations and are spared from the calamity of unbelief.
Love Always,
President & Sister Merkley

Faith, repentance, baptism, a testimony, and enduring conversion lead to the healing power of the Lord. Baptism is a covenant act—a sign of a commitment and a promise. Russell M. Nelson Liahona Nov. 2005

Co-Driver Responsibilities A Message from your Vehicle Coordinator Elder Bear Bowers There are good and bad things associated with having two or more people in our cars at all times.
GOOD THINGS A Second look-out Navigator
BAD THINGS
Sleeping companion
Reading companion
Horsing around Three out of four missionaries who have been killed or critically injured in auto accidents were co-drivers, not drivers! Your responsibility as a co-driver is just as important as the driver. Do not ever think that the driver is always concentrating on driving as he should. Be alert. Be helpful. Don’t let the driver do anything to distract him from his driving. The co-driver should be the person who talks on the cell phone, changes the CD player, or adjusts the temperature.
It is your responsibility to use good common sense and remember that your vehicle cannot think as you do. It does only what you make it do.
COMMITMENT
Driver, co-driver and passengers must commit to each other to drive as a team.
What It Means to Love as Jesus Loves Us
"When we truly understand what it means to love as Jesus Christ loves us, the confusion clears and our priorities align. Our walk as disciples of Christ becomes more joyful. Our lives take on new meaning. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father becomes more profound. Obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden."
Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "The Love of God," Ensign, Nov. 2009, 21
ASSISTANTS’ MESSAGE Dear Elders and Sisters,
We are very appreciative of the way in which you assisted in moving the transfer loop along in an effective and efficient manner on such a short notice, and under the circumstances we found ourselves in. We also would ask of you to thank all of the faithful Members who helped in the transfer loop. Much like it was said of Helaman’s Stripling Soldiers, we feel that all of you are “Men (and women) who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.” (Alma 53:20) Typically, it is not during the times of ease that we see who we truly are, but it is when we are tested, and tried. When we are called upon in the spur of the moment to do things that are inconvenient or demanding, that is when we have the opportunity to perform great work. Just as it was also said of that same heroic group of young individuals that Helaman led, it can be said of all of you “They did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them”.(Alma 57:21)
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said it this way “But young men (and women), you will learn, if you have not already, that in frightening, even perilous moments, your faith . . . will demand the very best of you and the best you can call down from heaven.” It is in these “perilous moments” that we often find ourselves; we ought to always be prepared for them as all of you were on transfer loop. It is of those moments that Winston Churchill warned the people of England about when he said “To every man there comes . . . that special moment when he is figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a special thing unique to him and fitted to his talent. What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared or unqualified for the work which would be his finest hour!”
We trust that all of you are meeting the Lord’s expectations, and living up to what Elder Ballard once said “We expect you to be missionaries to match our glorious message.”
We love and appreciate all that you do to be “True at all times”.
Elder Conrad and Elder Hancock
