SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is moving missionaries who aren't Venezuelan out of that country due to government protests, according to an updated statement released Monday afternoon.
"Due to the unrest in Venezuela, the church is transferring 152 missionaries who are not Venezuelan citizens to other missions in South America. Venezuelan missionaries are in frequent communication with their mission presidents, and every effort is being made to keep them safe.”
A Venezuelan national guardsman was shot to death Sunday night during anti-government protests, the Associated Press reported.
The violence led Air Canada to suspend flights on Monday, according to a separate AP report.
The LDS Church has four missions, a temple, 281 congregations and nearly 158,000 members in Venezuela.
There are 75 LDS missions throughout South America.
