THE MESSENGER

VENEZUELA CARACAS EAST MISSION
FEBRUARY 1992

Translated from the Spanish by Erin Howarth 02-25-2002

Those that leave to preach the gospel as servants of the Lord save themselves.
The Lord, in turn, blesses those that listen.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We have been speaking much of faith and what it means for a missionary to work with faith. We must constantly have personal dignity and be obedient, so that we make ourselves worthy of the blessing of an strong and invariable faith.

Obedience is the first law of the heavens and is that which helps us achieve success in the mission. Many times we have laws which appear small and insignificant. We think that if we don’t obey them, nothing will happen. For example: telephone calls, poor use of p’day, going to bed late, listening to inappropriate music, speaking constantly in English, wasting time, etc. If we learn to obey even the small things, when we have to obey greater laws, we will do it without problems, because we will have been practicing each day in the minor things.

D&C 64:33-34 “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.”

The obedient missionary will always have by his or her side, the companionship of the spirit who will guide constantly and will know with certainty that which must be done, or that is to say, or where to go in order to find the pure in heart.

Alma 26:22 “ Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing—unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.”

It will be a positive influence for your companion, whom you will respect, he or she will follow and never forget your personal example of obedience and love for the work.

Then we are obedient, and we will develop the faith that we need to be powerful in words and deeds.

We love you very much and we know that you are the best!

President and Sister Hoffman

THE PRESIDENT’S POINTS REGARDING YOUR HEALTH:

I have noticed with great worry that lately the missionaries have been sick with great frequency. They call me after several days of illness after the case has become grave, meriting medical attention and many times the need to be hospitalized, which causes great expense and loss of time for the sick as well as his or her companion.

In each zone conference I have taken the time to give you instructions regarding preventive health care and what you should do in the most common cases, like colds, diarrhea, foot fungus, sore throat, and headaches, but I see that you are not putting into practice the counsel that I give.

We should remember that the money that we use to cover all the missionary expenses comes from the sacred tithing of the faithful members and that it must be administered wisely.

Now I repeat what you should do in the most common cases:

DIARRHEA - First try one day with STREPTOMAGNA: 2 pills at first then take 1 every 8 hours. Take a stool sample to the laboratory. Call me with the results. If the diarrhea continues, take BACTRIMEL, 1 pill every 8 hours for two days together with STREPTOMAGMA.

SORE THROAT - Gargle with SOLUNOVAR or LISTERINE, or WARM WATER WITH SALT or any other antiseptic.

HEAD ACHE - take TEMPRA or ASPIRIN or PARSEL or CONMEL. No more than 2 pills every 4 hours.

COLDS AND FEVER - Take TEMPRA, lots of liquids and rest, IN ORDER TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS FEVER, YOU SHOULD TAKE YOU TEMPERATURE WITH A THERMOMETER AND IF IT RISES ABOVE 102 DEGREES, you should call me.

FOOT FUNGUS - Mycrosport solution, 2 times a day. After showering, dry your toes carefully before applying this solution. You should use clean socks every day.

you should take vitamin C “oranvit” (1 gram) each day in order to strengthen you defenses, you should also take a multi vitamin (whichever brand); don’t use fans directly over your body, maintain personal hygiene and in your apartments, wash your hands before eating and every time you use the bathroom. Don’t eat from the food booths in the street. Drink only purified bottled water or boiled water (the water should boil for a minimum of 10 minutes. Wash fruits and vegetables carefully.

Before you go to the doctor, you should get permission from the mission president. Please take care of yourselves, we love you very much.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANTS

I slept and dreamed that life was HAPPY. I woke and saw that life was SERVICE. I served and saw that life was HAPPY.

As the above phrase says, the children of God are happy when they serve their fellow man. We, as missionaries, have an even greater reason to serve our fellow man and be happy. We have a vision of a fuller, greater life through the gospel of Christ and the difference that means in our lives. A knowers of the word, we must convert our whole heart to the service of God’s children here in Venezuela, to serve our companions and especially our Lord.

When we worry about the well being of others, we see that our own problems an tests are not so great as we thought. Service gives us happiness and the power to overcome our problems. We invite you to SERVE MORE, and WE PROMISE that you will have much success through SERVICE.

We love you very much,
Elders Waite, Leon and Roberts

Dear and appreciated elders and sisters:

It is a pleasure for me to direct me to you and be able to be at your service here in the office. I want to inform you that the Liahona (Ensign in Spanish) from January and February arrived in the PBO [presiding bishoprics office] and they will come to us this month. As soon as they arrive, I will send them out. Also, be advised that there are no garments currently available in medium sizes. We are hoping to get some in May. There are no small hymnbooks, nor pamphlets for the discussion, nor visual aides. Neither are their any VHS videos. We are waiting for them!
Thanks for your patience.
With love, Elder López, materials secretary.

MESSAGE FROM THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY:
If we do not receive the invoices from you advances after TWO WEEKS, we will deduct this amount from you account. I hope that I have been clear on this point.
With love, Elder Sego.
