Retired from United Airlines in 1984 after 33+ year career. Served as branch president of the Dai Ichi Branch of the Salt Lake Valley Regional Mission to Minority Groups in 1957. Served twice as bishop. Total of 8 years. Last visit to Japan in 1976 when I took my children to give them an o-benjo, o-furo and futami experience. They also had the opportunity to travel to England, France, Italy, Israel, Mexico and many other cultural/ historical places.
I went to the Japanese Mission in March, 1953 in company with Milo Durfee, sailing from SFO on the SS Pres. Cleveland. Following a stop in L.A. we
sailed on to HNL where Sister Eleanor Ono joined us enroute to Japan. Elder
Durfee returned after two years to claim his G.I. Bill benefits and of
course, Ono Shimai was not a 3 year missionary, obviously, therefore,
because of the Korean War I was released by Pres. Andrus - his first
release - in April 1956 and because it would be necessary to travel alone, I
requested air transportation. Pres. Hilton Robertson, my second president,
wrote to SLC asking for approval for air travel and the First Presidency
authorized it, thus making me, I believe, the first missionary to travel by
air. I served in Shibata, Niigata Ken; Asahigawa, Hokkaido; Yanai, Yamaguchi Ken; Hiroshima; Tokyo, Nerima-Ikebukuro area and finally, in Yokohama. I was present in July, 1955 when Elder Joseph Fielding Smith created the NFE and SFE missions. I had opportunity to serve from one end of the mission to the other, with the exception of Kyushu. In July, '55 in company with other missionaries and members, I climbed to the summit of Fuji-san. Missionaries do not do such things any more. I did fly home in April, 1956 (50 years ago this very month!) on a Pan American propeller airplane, stopping at Wake Island and Honolulu where I stayed over for a few days to attend the temple. |
