News Item: President Ira Somers Passes Away

Hi everyone,
Just a quick note to tell you that my Father passed away this early morning. He had been in a tremendous amount of pain but was mobile up until Monday afternoon. He was able to speak at will through Sunday and spoke occasionally on Monday and Tuesday . . . for instance my Mother said something about him "going" on Tuesday to my brother and he piped up, "I am very much alive!" He knew all that was going on which made it so nice for us.
The Bishop came last night and offered to give him a blessing of release and he nodded his head that he wanted that. At the end of the blessing he was able to say, "amen". We asked him if he could possibly wait until Christie arrived--she was driving down from Manhattan. She arrived about midnight and she and I sat with him for a couple of hours. Christie held his hand and filled him in on all of her comings and goings and when she would go to let go he gripped it tightly. I went to bed about 2:20 and she went to bed at 2:30. My sister woke up at 3:10 and thought he was gone, so she came and got me to verify it. He had gone in his sleep and with all of his dignity--all of the things that Hospice told us we could expect--eyes open, blood from the nose and mouth, loss of bladder and bowels, etc--none of that applied to him.
His funeral is Monday morning at 11 am with a viewing one hour before and on Sunday evening from 5 - 7 pm at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia.
We just wanted to let everyone know. Have a great day and know how much my Father loved you.

There will be a small obituary in the Washington Post on Friday and possibly a larger one due to his professional responsibilities early next week. I think that we are also sending a notice to the Deseret News.
