Biography: President Porter was president of the Salt Lake Cottonwood Heights Stake when he was called as mission president at age 42. He had received a BS degree from the U of U and was an executive in the Century 21 Porter and Co.
Pres. of Japan Kobe Mission 1980 to 1983. We have returned after serving for two years in the Japan MTC. It was a marvelous experience! Since it is located next to the temple we were blessed to see many of the Japanese missionaries we worked with over 20 years ago come to the temple to do work. Many are now serving as Bishops, High Councilors, etc
We are happy to be back in our home in Mesa, Arizona. All of our children and grandchildren live near us. That makes us “empty nesters”.
After being away from our children and grandchildren for two years we decided we would start a new tradition an annual family reunion in Midway, Utah at our cabin.
On December 14 we received a mission call to serve for two years as Director n the Mesa Regional Family History Center. We are excited to accept this new call. We are grateful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His love for all of us.
“President Porter,” said Elder Kikuchi, “didn’t you serve a mission to Japan?”
“Well, yes, I did,” replied President Porter, wondering how Elder Kikuchi knew.
They were still shaking hands, Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi staring closely at President R. Gordon Porter. “You confirmed me a member of the Church.”
President Porter thought back to his time in Japan. “It had been almost 20 yrs,” he said, “but as we shook hands I could suddenly remember that home in Hokkaido, and I could see that young gakusei [student] standing at the door as my sr companion, Delmont Law, talked with him.”
This meeting, across two decades and thousands of miles, is an apt symbol of how the gospel has affected the life of Yoshihiko Kikuchi, taking him from one unexpected transition to another. Through those changes, he has remained faithful and humble. |
