Stories: Dog and Sheep in Moab

First let me say that I agree with Denver about this area of the UPM.
There was a time, while serving in Moab. My companion and I were walking to the grocery store. At this time the elders apartment was a very little “chicken coop” on the street behind the one of the schools (it has been years since I have been through Moab, I don’t even know if those are still up or if they have been torn down yet). Anyway, while walking to the store we crossed a walking bridge over the river and just before that there was a small field with sheep in it. Three dogs had gotten into the field and pulled down one of the sheep and were having a little snack. It was quite a gruesome site. On the way back, we saw the old man who owned the sheep walking along the back of the field with a 2x4 in hand. When he got to the dogs, he let loose at one of the dogs and hit it right across the snout. I heard the most disturbing sound in my life (and I heard it as my oldest son broke his arm). That dog let out a yelp that made both my companion and I cringe and shivers went up our spines. We rushed home and called the sheriff’s office. After a few minutes of waiting an officer called us back to let us know the man owned the dogs and had to kill them because “once they have tasted fresh meat they will never eat anything else.” Come to find out about a week later, this man was one of those infamous Moab anti-Mormon people and the policeman that came to his home to investigate told him the LDS missionaries called in about the incident.
That’s one of the best stories I have from my service, although it is not really that funny. |
