Stories: No Fishes Go to Heaven

I was on a split with a Ward missionary who was an RM who had served in a Spanish-speaking mission. We were teaching the discussions to a number of Mexican migratory workers, all brothers who would shepherd the animals.
A bit frustrated that I needed to present the discussions through a translator, I was trying to pick up some Spanish words along the way.
Thinking I had picked up the Spanish word for sin, I said, "Our 'sins' keep us from getting to heaven."
My translator was obviously amused and seemed to be describing what I said to the brothers, who also appeared amused.
Knowing I had made a faux pas, I asked what my mistake was. Evidently, instead of saying "sins", I had used a similar-sounding word in Spanish, "fishes".
"Our fishes keep us from getting to heaven," fell soundly into the realm of false-doctrine. |
