Visiting Bordeaux/Le Barp 08 Jun 2007
I am going to be visiting the Bordeaux area (Le Barp) for business in June. I am so excited to finally get back to France after 13 years!

However, I just found out that my hotel reservations fell through (some big wine festival has all the hotels booked solid). Does anyone in or around the Bordeaux area know of (or have) a room that I could rent from the 17th to the 23 of June (bed and breakfast, etc.)? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Merci,

Nathan Masters

Yep - if your parents are EU citizens then you should get your OWN EU passport immediately. This will cause maybe a few weeks delay but will be surest way to make your life easier for everything form employment, rental contracts, telephone lines, re-entry, outside Schengen and even for health coverage.

Once you get your UK/Irish Passport then you need to get the E111 health care card which will entitle you to "all immediate and necessary" health coverage while you look for a job. If your parents are UK orgin you should get this from the the UK Dept. Of Social Security . ( if you need help in getting this you can use my address in the UK and I will post this on to you).

As for jobs - well always good to have an English Teaching Certficate as a standby while you find the job you want.

Well good luck. I lived in Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Portugal with the freedom of movement rules in the EU and REALLY loved the ease of moving compared to the hassle when I was a missionary.

Re: Immigration to France 20 Apr 2007
If your parents are EU citizens, and you have an EU passport, then yes, it really is that easy. EU citizens have a right to live and work in all EU member nations.

Now here's the downside. Getting a job in France may be far from easy. In the first place, France has very heavy unemployment problems. It depends on your skills -- high skills are in high demand in France as much as anywhere else. But for the average person, finding a job is extremely difficult.

In addition, few French employers will see much reason to give a job to a foreigner if there's plenty of unemployed French people who are just as qualified. That would be widely regarded as unpatriotic.

The other problem you are likely to face is your command of French. How well do you speak it? Remember how the French tend to take offense when foreigners come to their country without even having bothered to learn a little of the language? After you've served a mission there, I would hope your French ability is significantly better than that, but if your command of French is halting and ungrammatical, an employer is going to worry about the effect you'll have on his customers. If you wish to work in France, your French will need to be pretty close to fluent.

So in short, even though an EU citizen does not, theoretically, need a job before he moves there, I think you would be wise to get one anyway.

BTW, are you by any chance related to Steve McBride of Calgary, parents from northern Ireland?

I would take the word of the French Embassy over any reply you're likely to receive here. =)

Urbain Demmen 19 Apr 2007
Does anybody have the contact information of Urbain Demmen? He lives in Le Mans, France and is a member of the branch / ward there. If you have his contact information, please send it to me.

Besides minitel and les pages jaunes is there an online phone directory for members of the church in france?

IMPORTANT - Immigration to France 19 Apr 2007
So here is the deal. I want to live and work in France, most likely I will stay there for the rest of my life. My parents are both E.U. citizens (European Union). I called the French Embassy in Vancouver and they told me that all I need to do is get photocopies of my parents' passports and marriage certificates, fly to France, go to a Prefecture, prove that my parents are E.U. citizens and then they will give me a carte de sejour which will permit me to work in France and I can continue to renew it each year.

Is it really this easy? Or do I need to prove that I have a company that is willing to hire me?

I do have two job opportunities that I am looking into.

Please e-mail me your responses or contact me via cell phone. Thanks.

I can't wait to make my first call on a landline or in a booth in France and hear "France Telecom, Bonjour!... Votre correspondant est occupe, essayez votre appel ulteriorment."

Frere Mas 11 Apr 2007
I just realized that, although I meant to post this message long ago, I never did. For those of you who served in Perigueux, I'm sure you remember the Mas family. Frere Mas was the ward mission leader for years. Sadly, about a year ago he passed away. If you are interested in getting a hold of his wife or son, let me know and I will e-mail you their addresses.

Blois 08 Apr 2007
Hi,
There is still a Branch in Blois. In fact if you do a search on lds.org go to the French site you'll find all the addresses listed there.
I've seen in your profile that you served in La Rochelle. If you remember the Bertrands, Renald and his little family have just moved to Blois.
I don't know if there are still missionaries there but i assume there still are.
Sorry i can't be more precise...

Elder Colby Draper 04 Apr 2007
I have lost all contact with my companion Colby Draper. The last time I talked with him he was living in Highland, Utah and is married with a child. If you know his e-mail and cell, please e-mail it to me immediately as I am making a trip to Utah at the end of April.
